What is sports massage?

Sports massage is a results-focused style of bodywork that uses firm, targeted pressure to address muscle tension, stiffness, and movement restrictions.

Techniques used in sports massage:

Trigger Point Work
Focused, sustained pressure applied to tight knots (trigger points) in muscles that refer pain to other areas of the body. For example, a trigger point in your shoulder blade might cause pain down your arm, or tension in your glutes might trigger sciatica-like symptoms. By releasing these points, the referred pain often decreases significantly.

Deep Tissue
Slow, firm pressure that reaches the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue where chronic tension builds up over time. Unlike lighter massage, deep tissue work targets the root of stiffness and restriction, helping to break up adhesions and restore tissue mobility. The pressure is deliberate and controlled.

Myofascial Release
Myofascial release therapy is a type of manual therapy that targets the fascia, the thin layer of connective tissue that surrounds your muscles and organs. When your fascia becomes tight or restricted, it can cause pain and discomfort throughout your body. Myofascial release therapy works by applying gentle, sustained pressure to the fascia, which helps to release tension and promote healing

Assisted Stretching
Stretching performed during the session while your body is relaxed on the table. I move your limbs through their range of motion, targeting tight muscles and restricted joints. This allows for deeper, more effective stretching than you could achieve on your own, and helps improve flexibility and functional movement.

Cupping
Cupping uses suction to lift and decompress tight tissue—the opposite of traditional massage, which pushes down. This creates space between tissue layers, releasing deep restrictions.
Benefits: Breaks up adhesions, improves circulation, reduces stiffness (especially in the back, shoulders, and neck), and speeds recovery.
You may have temporary circular marks that fade within a few days.

Heated Scraping (Gua Sha/IASTM)
A smooth, warmed tool glides along muscles and fascia to break up scar tissue and restrictions.
Benefits: Increases range of motion, reduces inflammation, and targets stubborn areas like IT band tightness, plantar fasciitis, or shoulder impingement.
You may see temporary redness that fades quickly.

Both are complimentary add-ons—only used when they'll enhance your results.

What should I wear to my session?

Accepted Answer

For your session, please wear flexible shorts such as athletic or basketball shorts. Sessions are performed without full draping so the body can move freely during the session. For women, draping is provided for upper-body areas to ensure comfort and privacy.

Is your massage work painful?

Therapeutic massage can involve some discomfort, especially if you're new to this type of work or have a lot of built-up tension.

Most clients describe it as "good pain"—the kind that leads to immediate or next-day relief.

Here's how I approach pressure:
The focus isn't on how much pressure you can tolerate. It's on finding the firmest pressure your body can receive while staying relaxed enough to let the work be effective.

If your muscles are guarding or you're holding your breath, the pressure is too much. I'll guide your breathing as needed to help your body soften and respond to the work.

We communicate throughout the session, and I always adjust based on your comfort level.

Is your massage more relaxing or more therapeutic?

My work is therapeutic first—focused on addressing chronic tension, pain, and movement restrictions.

That said, many clients find it deeply relaxing because releasing held tension allows the body to feel calmer and more at ease.

If you're looking for spa-style relaxation with light pressure, this isn't the right fit.

If you want results-focused bodywork that addresses the root cause of your pain while still being paced and responsive to your needs—this is exactly what I offer.

The goal is sustainable relief. But when your body releases tension, relaxation often follows naturally.

Do I need to be in pain to book a session?

No. You don't need to be in acute pain to benefit from this work.

Many clients book because they feel:
Stiff or tight, even without sharp pain
Like their body is always holding tension
Limited in how they move or stretch
Generally uncomfortable after long days at work

This type of massage is also helpful for preventing pain from building up—especially if you have a physically demanding job, spend long hours at a desk, or stay active and want to support your body proactively.

Weekly or biweekly sessions often work best at first. This helps your body build on the progress from each session rather than reverting back to old patterns.

Once tension starts to ease, many clients shift to every 3–4 weeks to maintain comfort and mobility.

For general self-care:
Monthly sessions can help keep your body feeling balanced, especially if you're physically active or have a demanding job.
